Ram Odera came to Whissendine in 2011 and opened up the shop bringing a needed amenity back to the village, taking over the premises of the closed restaurant.
The shop is well stocked with fresh local produce, village eggs from Loodal Farms, Rutland preserves, jams and chutneys, bread from King Street Bakery in Melton Mowbray and Hambleton Bakery, and bacon, sausages and pork pies from Grasmere.
There are always specials and the Pound Zone as well as lottery tickets, newspapers & magazines (you can order in your favourite) and an ATM machine. You can even leave your dry cleaning as the shop is an agent for Snowflake
in Melton Mowbray.
The shop has become the heart of the village and Ram strives to support the community, with a cooking demonstration for the WI, to a Bollywood Nite at the Sports Hall to raise money for charity.
Just 18 months after opening, the shop was placed on an elite list of the top 100 independent shops in the UK and Ireland, much to the delight of Ram.
The Independent Achievers Academy is a business development and recognition programme for independent retailers, and rewards outstanding achievements in the sector. The judging process for the list included a mystery shopper visit and an interview with the judges. The award was given based on the shop’s layout, the products it sells and its work within the community. See more here
