Well, that’s it. Another Olympics over. We can slump back on our couches now. Wait a minute. That’s what we did while we watched the fittest athletes in the world compete for the highest prizes … OK. As you were.

Un mondo novo (a new world) was the theme of the Rio 2016 Olympics. The first Games to be held in what the first European explorers called “the New World” (I know it wasn’t called Europe at that time. Don’t write. Thank you.) A new world to explore, settle and exploit.

We will have to wait and see what is the legacy of Rio 2016. London’s theme in 2012 was “inspire a generation”. To get us off our couches. Are you fitter than you were 4 years ago? Which Olympic sport inspired you the most? I’m blown away by the gymnastics, but…. not in my wildest dreams. But maybe the next generation are being inspired to get out there and emulate Max Whitlock.

Being world changers, however, doesn’t have to rest with elite athletes or the young. We can all make a difference. Easily. As easily as texting UNICEF with £3 a month to provide shelter for refugee children. As easy as looking out for your neighbour. As easy as saying a prayer with someone in distress. Tiny actions which make tiny, yet huge differences.

Maybe you’re old enough to remember this hymn from school:
Little drops of water, little grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean and the beauteous land.
Little deeds of kindness, little words of love,
Make our earth and Eden, like the heaven above.

I know – it’s syrupy sweet. But true. Christians are called to pray and work for the time when this world becomes good and perfect as God’s kingdom. Now that really will be un mondo novo.

Blessings
