Cotton Bunting

When I put the first tentative notice in the Grapevine announcing the Knit and Natter group, I was hoping for maybe three or four people to turn up and that we would have a lovely time knitting and nattering but that it would all fizzle out within a few months. The first week, Jean and Audrey turned up; the next week Sue and Caroline came as well; a few months later there were eleven of us. I am delighted to announce that we have just celebrated our sixth anniversary! How wrong I was to assume that people would lose interest and how happy I am to have been proved wrong!

So to carry on the theme of celebrations, I have chosen Cotton Bunting for this month’s pattern (by the way, we celebrated with tea and cakes – what else!).

For this you will need two or three colours of DK Cotton, a pair of 4mm needles, a length of cotton tape and several buttons. I am being a bit vague about quantities as you can make as much or as little as you choose, I made nine ‘flags’.

With 4mm needles cast on 3 sts and knit 2 rows
Next and every 4th row: inc 1st in first and last stitch
At the same time, when you reach 13sts add in a second colour for 4 rows, change back to main colour for 4 rows. Repeat this twice more (23 sts), cast off. Sew a small button in the middle of the second stripe for decoration.

Knit as many ‘flags’ as you want, then stretch out the cotton tape, arrange them as you wish and then sew them on either by hand or machine, making sure that you fold over the ends of the tape to make loops for ease of hanging.
