‘Flood Mary’ – Free Community Flood Awareness Event

Rutland County Council is inviting residents, businesses, and community groups to attend “Flood Mary”, a free flood awareness and preparedness event taking place on Friday 19 September 2025, from 2pm to 6pm at Rutland County Council, Catmose, Oakham, LE15 6HP.

The event will bring together key organisations involved in managing flood risk – including the Environment Agency, Anglian Water and emergency services, to offer practical advice, answer questions, and share information on how to prepare for and respond to flooding.

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Step inside the FloodPod – experience a real-life flood-resilient home
  • Speak to the experts – get guidance from RCC, EA, and other partners
  • Check your flood risk – with live mapping and advice
  • Protect your property – explore flood doors, barriers, and other resilience tools
  • Learn emergency actions – quick response tips and checklists
  • Share your story – contribute to future flood planning in Rutland
  • Bring the family – an informative, family-friendly afternoon

A highlight of the event will be the chance to meet Flood Mary, who will share first-hand recovery experiences and practical tips for building long-term flood resilience.

Rutland County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport, Environment and Communities, Cllr Christine Wise, said:

‘Flooding is a growing risk, with climate change leading to more frequent extreme weather events.

‘While the risk of severe flooding in Rutland is lower than other areas, Rutland has had areas that have experienced first-hand the challenges that flooding can bring, from disrupted travel and damaged homes, to the emotional impact on families and businesses. It is therefore important that we all know how to prepare for severe weather, stay safe and prevent damage from flooding.

‘It is clear that flooding can have a devastating impact, but with the right knowledge and preparation, communities can greatly reduce the risk and recover more quickly. Flood Mary is about bringing people together, sharing information, and empowering residents to take simple, effective steps to protect their homes, businesses, and neighbourhoods.’
